Douglas McDougall
Principal Investigator
Doug is a Professor of Mathematics Education at OISE, University of Toronto. He is currently the Director of the Centre for Science, Mathematics and Technology Education. He is also the Editor-in-Chief of the Canadian Journal for Science. Mathematics and Technology Education. Doug is a former Associate Dean, Programs and Chair of the Department of Curriculum, Teaching and Learning. He is a member of the Governing Council of the University of Toronto and vice-chair of the Academic Board. Doug’s scholarship, teaching, and creative professional activity program focus on mathematics teaching and learning, the professional learning of teachers, reciprocal learning between teachers in China and Canada, technology-supported learning, and academic leadership.
Sofia Ferreyro Mazieres
Project Manager
Sofia is a recent Ph.D. graduate in Curriculum and Pedagogy at OISE, University of Toronto. Her doctoral study focused on teacher perceptions, practices, and challenges in de-tracked grade 9 mathematics. Sofia is currently the project manager for the research project on creating equitable structures in early secondary school mathematics. She has eight years of experience as a research assistant taking part in numerous projects such as the Collaborative Inquiry Project: Grade 7, 8 and 9 Mathematics, the Mathematics Concepts for Elementary Teacher Candidates Project, and the Grades 3-6 Mathematics Improvement Project. Sofia has nine years of teaching experience with the Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board and has also been a course instructor for the Master of Teaching program. Sofia’s research interests are elementary and secondary mathematics teaching and learning, financial literacy, online learning, and equity in mathematics.


Kelly Zian Zhang
Research Assistant
Kelly is a Full-time PhD student in curriculum and pedagogy program at OISE. She completed her OISE master’s degree in the Curriculum Studies and Teacher Development program in 2016. Kelly’s research interests focus on governance, educational policy, political education and leadership. Currently, she is Graduate Research Assistant (GA) for SSHRC Creating equitable structures in early secondary school mathematics project, researcher at Encore Lab. She worked as GA for SSHRC Reciprocal learning in teacher education and school education between Canada and China project. She serves as two-year term Co-President at the Canadian Committee of Graduate Students in Education (CCGSE), which is the graduate student caucus within Canada’s national network of educational researchers, the Canadian Society for the Study of Education (CSSE). She is also External Coordinator at CTL Students’ Association (CTLSA) and Graduate Student Member at OISE Council & Research Committee. She completed her role as Communications on a sub-committee for GSRC 2022 Conference. She participated in the OISE Mentorship Program in 2020 as a volunteer mentor of two MEd students. During her master’s study, Kelly served as OISE Student Ambassador and Executive Committee Member of Civics Committee at UTGSU.
Ingrid D’Silva
Research Assistant
Ingrid is a Ph.D. student in Curriculum and Pedagogy at OISE, University of Toronto. She is a compassionate and patient educator that has been teaching secondary school math with the Toronto District School Board for the last 15 years. Ingrid also has taken on various roles with several educational publishers, creating numerous titles in K-12 mathematics. Her research interests are in the areas of secondary school mathematics, including mathematical readiness, accessibility, assessment, and instructional design. She has been at the forefront of the de-streaming mathematics initiative and has been involved in integrating financial literacy in secondary mathematics.


Rachael Lewitzky
Research Assistant
Rachael is a Ph.D. candidate in Curriculum and Pedagogy at OISE, University of Toronto. Her research interests are mathematics and statistics education, post-secondary education, online learning, curriculum development, and inclusive instructional design.
Chelsie Leger
Research Assistant
Chelsie is a Ph.D. student in the Curriculum and Pedagogy Department at OISE, University of Toronto. She has been teaching high school math in Ottawa and Toronto for ten years. Her research interests include secondary school mathematics, English Language Learners, and transitions in mathematics.


Jeremy Labrie
Research Assistant
Jeremy is currently an M.A. student in Curriculum and Pedagogy at OISE, University of Toronto. He has 16 years of experience as a secondary school mathematics and special education teacher in Ontario. His research focuses on instructional interventions that support secondary school students’ learning of mathematics.
Qi Lin
Research Assistant
Qi is a Ph.D. candidate in the Faculty of Education, East China Normal University. He is also a visiting scholar at OISE, University of Toronto. His research interests mainly focus on teacher education, teacher professional learning, and mathematics education. He has published several journal articles and conference articles, meanwhile, he also serves as a graduate student reviewer of American Educational Research Association.
